< The laying eggs report of red-eared slider, Kamemi 2008>

The report of laying eggs of Kamemi in this summer is as follows.

The report of 2004, 2005, 2006 ,2007 ,2009 ,2010

The 1st time
May 30 (Fri.)

Kamemi which usually doesn't like outdoor hoped to bask in the sun in the balcony.
So she started the activity for egg-laying soon. The start is 2 weeks-a month
earlier than usual year.

Her usual activities we can see only at her egg season.
Do you know where Kamemi is?
It's on the shoulder of me sitting on the living room.

A big turtle stops on my shoulder just like a bird.
It's a strange spectacle. She always does like this
whenever her eggs' season come. She approaches me
and climbs my body forcibly as soon as she finds me.
Next she tries to climb to my head scratching my
scratching my hair by her nails.

I feel that she comes to say to my face something.
She might ask me " Take me out, please! I want to dig ground.
"

She often upsets beside the window
when she tries to go out .The sound of
her shell heardfrom the living room at dim
time before daybreak. But she can't rise
for herself. She takes at glance here
when someone approaches her, and appeals
to us" Help to return me, please!"

She thanks to me(?) snuffing when
I upset her body.

June 8 (Sun.)

I began to prepare the egg-laying place for her because she wants to go out too much as usual.

June 9 (Mon.)

But her activity stopped and she settled down while I prepared it. Though I expected such a
state because she likes very hot days in midsummer, I'm a little sorry thatthe laying place
I prepared wasn't useful soon. The laying place for Kamemi changed to Kumosuke's play
spot for a while.

Laying place I made
A lot of pots in the balcony were taken off
and cleaned with water there at first.
Next they were displayed again for
her egg-laying putting empty pots among them.
Much energy is necessary for the laying
place making.

(To tell the truth the Kumosuke hide also in this picture.)

Kumosuke which is playing on the pot place
for Kamemi cheerfully appears here.
He must be comfortable surely after he warmed.
his plastron on the soil. He often takes a nap here.

.
June 21(Sat.)

She begins her activity again suddenly. But I couldn't leave her to balcony due to a spell
of rainy cays. It's damp moist. for us that she goes out and into the water and run all over
the house at the rainy days
June 24(Tue.)

It was fine weather after a long time. Though she went out to the pot place of
the balcony and dug mixing the soil ....
When I went to the balcony to see her after
a while
I couldn't find her anywhere.

When I see carefully, she was at such a place.
Both Kamemi & Kumosuke like here very much.

Kamemi was digging even the soil in the pot
for the water lily.
She hasn't laid eggs yet after all.

Here is the place where Kumosuke
spend during Kamemi's
activity for egg-laying.

It's at the other end of Kamemi's place
in the balcony. It's a small herb garden
surrounded by various herbs

Kamemi gives up digging and returns the room soon
despite going out to dig the pots many times.

I need to gather the soil scattered around by her,
return it to the pots and harden it so that she can
feel response of digging from soil well next time
whenever she returns room.

It's important for her egg-laying to keep her
pace. So we should wail the time she feels like
laying patiently.

June 28(Sat.)

She had been going out to dig and returning the room many time from the morning. But she didn't
return any more when she went out around 6:00 PM. It was about 11 PM when she returned.
I found 4 eggs at the space among the pots when I checked them after her coming home.
The eggs she laid this time are

A big eggs
A small egg
And a broken egg yolk went out of

The total is 4

The 2nd time
July 6 (Sun.)

Only about a week after Kamemi laid 4 eggs+ an immature egg. She has already started the next
activity for egg laying.. It might sign of next egg laying that she was interested in Japanese room,
smelled straw mats sniffing it and she often relaxed there with her legs stretched for about
a week after last egg laying. Though I expected whether she might still have eggs as I felt that
she was heavy when I lift her just after her egg laying.... To my honest, I wanted her to be quiet
a little longer.

A dim face of turtle
But this isn't out of focus.

My gaze met hers through the frosted glass
of the window.
She also looks to be interested in me trough
the glass as the same as I am.

I can usually know where she is now by the sound and smell from the balcony, but the strange
sound heard this time. when I went to make sure it...
Kamemi was clinging to the brim of pot
for water hyacinths on the flower stand.

"I couldn't find here so far because it's
a high place. I haven't peeped inside it.
So I want to make sure it once"
(Kamemi)
She plunged into the soil of pot by her
head and made a mess of it by her
forefeet.

She smells with sniff and scratches by
her forefeet at first when she finds her
favorite place.

I 'm always nervous about sounds that she makes whenever Kamemi begins to act for
egg-laying. They are various sounds, for example clattering sound that her shell knocks
against a concrete floor, the sound that she goes trough the space among pots with gang,
the hissing sound that her shell, and rubs against some leaves Sound, and the sound
that she scratches the pots and soil by her fingernails when she begins to dig. All of these
are queer noises that can't seem to be made by people. I wondered if neighbors feel them
suspicious. But the family who live in our next door moved out and the room
next to mine became a vacant one. So my feelings became easer than usual this year.

July 11(Fri.)

It's usually takes as long as about a month from beginning her rage to laying the egg
So I tried the means different from always for her to make her lay the eggs more promptly
this time.
It's usually takes as long as about a month from beginning her rage to laying the egg
So I tried the means different from always for her to make her lay the eggs more promptly
this time.

I tried to release her to the balcony after her activity settled down a little and she start digging often
because I wanted her to dig the soil at the balcony without uselessness. But I thought this might be
the cause why her egg laying is delayed. Just digging without laying any eggs might be seemingly
useless. But it must be an important rehearsal for her. I wondered if she can't lay the eggs at ease
unless she can rehearse enough.
Then I tried to make her go out at any time when she wants to go out even if it's raining and even
at night, how many she wants, and even if it doesn't seems she lays soon.
It might be helpful for her. This time she laid eggs in less than only one week since she started her
activity this time

She which went out at about 8 PM didn't returned to even at midnight. When I went to make sure her,
I found some eggs between the pots as well as last time. She had just returned the soil back seriously
though any eggs weren't buried there. After all she returned to our living room at twelve thirty of midnight.

I found them at such a place like this 7 eggs of uniform size, and one of them
was broken and the inside of it went out.

And the next day I found an about 1 cm
size pretty egg like this under the tail of
Kamemi which took a rest in the water.
There is only water inside.
It seemed to be empty.
It's transparent like a grain of rice
just after it was cooked.
It's beautiful like a jewel.
It became dry and dented when it was
left for a while.

Jul.20(Sun.)

9 days after her last egg laying. While I relaxed my guard about her laying completely, she became
to try to go out to the balcony again.Though I felt that she might still have some eggs because
she was so heavy despite of laying even 7 eggs when I left her...
She likes hot climate of summer. The end of rainy season ended up earlier than usual and
continue the day of summer becoming climate. It might be suitable for her.

Here is the place where she tries to go
just after she dashes out to the balcony
under of hot weather at midsummer
this time. It's under of vines of ivy.
She begins to scratch the concrete floor
directly while hiding herself in the bush
of the ivy
And she appeared on the flower pot
here when the sun decline a little
in the afternoon and begins to dig.
We can see her work from the room
well. But she often give up digging
and return to the room when my eye
meets her one.
. It must be hard even for her to work under the direct sunshine at the midsummer.

On the other hand, as for Kumosuke...
He has almost stretched
his legs in the water with
his head sunk at all
He rarely emerges from
the water because of
hot weather.
It looks to be very hot for him.
So I tried to put a lot of
water plants in it
combining the shelter for him.

He basks occasionally also in
such a place. He completely hides
himself in the bush of rosemary
to avoid direct sunlight.
He must feel further hot
because of his very black color.

Jul.28(Mon.)

Also this time I try to have her go out at any time when she hopes, regardless of the time,
even at the morning and midnight as I had studied the last experience of her laying. So she
has been repeating going out and coming from the balcony after she the soil in the flower pots
is scratched many times every daysince she starts her activity. This day she went out around
the evening and dug soil for as long as about one and a half hours. I expected that she lay eggs
very much. But to my sorry she returned soon. And she went out again around 10 PM. The sound
of hiss that rubs her shell and leaves was heard from the balcony in the darkness. It had never
stopped even after it passed 12 o'clock of the midnight. I kept waiting her coming back without
going bed. And the sound stopped about 1 AM suddenly. I wondered if she fallen asleep,
and made sure of her. She sat on the leaves of spider plants and her eyes opened completely.
The sound began to be heard in 10 minutes again. And it changed the sound that she came to
the room after the sound of "bang"When I went out to see her and lift her, I felt she was still
heavy. I made sure of the place where she was later. But I couldn't find any signs that
she laid eggs at all as I expected.

Jul.29(Tues.)

She looks to have finished laying eggs already though she haven't laid eggs yet actually today.
She sinks in water and doesn't try to move. She moves quickly only when she find me
to press something to eat. She eats and eats. I wonder why she can eat so much
though she still has eggs, She eats energetically. She must be tired with digging at hot time
everyday. By when does her this rest continue. It's a rest for me, her keeper, too.

Aug.5(Tues.)

It's just a week since Kamemi has settled down quietly. I felt she seems to start her activity
again soon because she tried to go out balcony the day before this day. So she began to
act again as I expected. Her owner me should also hold out with her again..

She was very quiet except eating time. She stayed in water indefinitely if I left her as she likes.

So her body gets slimy soon. I had her leave in the room in the afternoon every day
to dry her body. She went for a Japanese room without failure at first when I left her the room..
I don't know the reason. But I can know from my experiences that she will begin her activity later
as long as she wants to go for Japanese room.

I opened the window and the net against insects of Japanese room and piled a cushion and towels
for her near the window. Then she makes her place there and spent time until the sun grows dark
sitting there in a dignified manner like the queen. She doesn't mind strong wind only now
and she looks to enjoy the wind of summer with grass smell.
though she usually dislikes air from outside and returns to room as soon as she feels wind.

Aug.6(Thurs.)

This day, the prune and the disinfection of the planting of our company house were done.
We couldn't hang out washing outdoors and can't put out Kamemi & Kumosuke, too.

Very noisy sound using an electric saw was heard from outside at the same time at the
same time as the work begins. And Kamemi looked to be surprised at the sound. She did not
try to go outside suddenly and remained sitting on the towel under the table.
.
I decided to take out Kamemi to have her dig ground.
I took her to a park next to usual field at a few minutes walk from our house at the first time,
considering time when number of dogs that stroll are getting few.

Here is the park we went.
It's a park that our next city manages
because we live in the city boundary.
It felt easy for me to watch her sitting on
the bench of park.

In addition, I found an advantage of coming to park. It's that persons who brought
their dogs for stroll talk to me in a park. It's different from the time when I watched her in bush
of the field by myself. I'm not tired of it and have a happy time.
They remembered her name, Kamemi, and their dogs all were interested in a turtle
that they saw at the first time,

But She had been interested in her bag much more than the balcony since I took her out as I was expected.
It's as follows.
She finds the bag and comes in it or climbs on it
even if I put the bag anywhere.
The sound she scratches the bag by her nails is
very annoying.

It is under a wooden cart type planter case
put here as their play equipment so that
Kamemi & Kumosuke rub their shells.
She has brought her bag here pushing it.

Aug. 9(Sat.)

To tell the truth, Kamemi didn't like her usual laying place so much from the beginning this year,
She looks to be interested in Kumosuke's place where we made for him at first time this summer,
She entered into his place and tried to come in his container several times while looking aside
from them my guard. She might feel it's so nice because it's unknown area for her.

Then I tried to change Kamemi's place at the western area of balcony for Kumosuke's
place at the eastern area,
Kumosuke's area is the place to take shelter for Kumosuke and some plants that I don't want to
get rough by Kamemi and to recover plants weakened by her last egg laying.

Kamemi's new playing place,
Mannerism might not have been good for her. She came to be interested in her new laying place.
and dug a little seriously at first time this day, though she seemed to be interested in
also Kumosuke's playground as usual and a kind of plants put at new place were the same
as old one.

They are flowers of water Hyacinth
becoming to summer.

More than 10 flowers bloomed at a time
in the balcony.

We can feel the cool at the hot time in the summer.
There are so many that our balcony became
flower field. though only a flower of them even
is enough beautiful
Aug.12(Tues.)

She stopped her activity suddenly this morning and became quiet again though she climbed
on my thigh and was scratching there for a long time the last night.
Her weight was 2,300g when I put her on the scale. It's her usual weight.
So she might not have had so much eggs any more. Considering the time, it might be almost
the end of her serious laying-eggs digging soil. I have already started the cleaning of the balcony.

She laid 11 eggs and 2 immature eggs this summer so far. She which has settled down completely.
looks to feel autumn and have shifted the eating time to provide in hibernation from her egg- laying
season. (Aug. 25)
The 4th time
(Egg laying of
remaining eggs)
Sept. 2(Tue.)

I visited my parents house with Kamemi & kumosuke in summer.
And Kamemi suddenly began to lay eggs in water during her stay
there. We could find only impurity of water about the first one.
But we could find two eggs that Egg has sunk in water
as a next picture immediately after then.
One of them is bitten by her a little.
After all, she laid three eggs in total this day.

And she has been laying eggs each one at intervals of few days since then.
Sept. 5(Fri.) One
Sept. 6(Sut.) One
Sept.10(Wed.) One
Sept.12(Fri) One
Sept.14(Sun.) One
Sept.15(Fri.)

One
She laid as many as 9 eggs in total for about 2 weeks after then., All of them were big
and splendid eggs. And She stopped her laying this day completely.
She didn't do action for egg-laying at all and ate much for this period.
The change of scene might have stimulated her.
She laid 20 eggs and 2 immature eggs in total in this summer after all

(Extra) Some pictures of 2 turtles in my parents' house.
<Kumosuke>
He is interested in the washing-water in the
corner of the garden.
And he entered there soon.

<Kamemi>
She becomes shy when I opened the
window for her though she looked to
be interested in outdoor
She still likes space of cushions
also here

She is walking in the garden.
"Why are you looking me?"(Kamemi)
