Turtles of Ueno Area (Tokyo)

Turtles which is basking in the Shinobazu pond of near Ueno Zoo in Tokyo

Red eared-sliders and reeves turtles are basking beside the pond.

A red-eared slider is basking also on the root of grass as you see.

And not only red-eared sliders and reeves turtles, we could see a soft-shelled turtle basking here.
This is a picture of a which tries to flop into the pond as soon as it notices us.

A red-eared slider approached and tried to climb the rock of the pond to get food when we gave it some food of carps. It's very friendly.
It may be a turtle kept as pet before

On the other side, a reeves turtle is sitting under the leave of lotus to dry itself.
A lot of lotus are planted in this pond and they bloom at their best in summer.

This is the stone carved the turtle shape. It's a monument on Bentenjima island of this pond. It reads" Thanks to soft-shelled turtles".

This is the turtle shaped pedestal for a monument called "kifu"of Kaneiji temple in Ueno. The explanation board reads" This monument was inscribed to the achievement of Ryoozenji who is a priest of obaku sect of Buddhism in the early Edo period. "
Its face with ears doesn't look a turtle as well as them of a lot of other turtle shaped pedestal. But its shell and cute legs are surely them of turtles.

A few minutes walk passing Shinobazu pond along Sinobazu St. leads us to Nezu shrine.There are some ponds where we can a lot of turtles in this shrine, too.

These are the rabbits and turtles which are sitting on the left and right of girder of the Aesop bridge in the zoo.

It's a little difficult to find them because it's not so big. Try to find them if you have a chance to visit Ueno zoo.
